Below are the rules we use to grade our oak, using visual standards. If you are unsure as to the meaning of any of the terms, or which grade of oak would be best for your project then please don’t hesitate to contact us.

PRIME Grade:

Reference face:

  • No Sapwood
  • Pin Knots Allowed
  • 1 small knot of up to 20mm allowed on boards over 200mm width
  • No knots on edges

Opposite face:

  • Sapwood only on the corners
  • Knots allowed but no unsound knot

CHARACTER Grade:

Reference face:

  • No sapwood
  • Boards under 200mm: Knots of maximum 25mm allowed
  • Board over 200mm: knots of maximum 35mm allowed

Opposite face:

  • Sapwood on the corners and on one end
  • Black knots allowed (in moderation)
